History of the Czech Republic When Communism fell in 1989, there was no nation of the Czech Republic. They were in a two nation alliance formed in the early 1900s known as Czechoslakia. In 1993, the Czechs and the Slovaks officially separated in what is known as the ‘Velvet Divorce’ leaving two nations where there had been only one. When communism fell in 1989, Czech was one of the most atheistic nations on earth, and the work was cut out for the handful of believers in Jesus there. Since those days, they have planted hundreds of churches and won many people to the Lord. Still, there is less than .25% biblical Christians in Czech today. Of the 6,250 cities, towns and villages, it is estimated that only 250-300 have a vibrant living church.
